Garage Clean Out

I Resolve to Organize the Garage…Again!

cluttered garageI resolve to organize the garage…again! Sound familiar?

Getting organized falls just behind dieting, exercising, and quitting smoking as one of the most common – and repeated – New Year’s resolutions. But there is hope because we can help you tackle this daunting task and make positive home organization changes for the New Year.

Did you know that most families struggle with keeping the garage uncluttered? In fact, it’s estimated that only 30% of us keep our car in the garage.

Let’s look at the entire picture. If you have a garage plus basement storage or a workshop area and/or a shed, let’s eliminate the need to de-ice your car forever.

Here are some suggestions on how to tackle the clutter!

  1. Tackle one area at a time. Go through everything, yes everything, and make three piles: keep, toss, and donate.
  1. After the purge, group your belongings into categories, such as tools, garden equipment, toys, outdoor furniture, sports equipment.
  1. Repeat numbers 1 and 2 for other similar areas of your home, such as a basement workshop or shed.
  1. Decide where every group of items will be stored. Keep in mind how much room you need for each, and make logical selections based on convenience and safety.
  1. Once you move everything into its designated new area, decide how you’ll store items and what you need to complete the project. For example:
  • Use a shelving system or wall pegs to organize tools. Be sure to keep sharp items out of reach, and make frequently used items more accessible.
  • Jars or small containers can be used for items, such as nails, screws bolts.
  • Large plastic storage bins are lightweight and easy to use for seasonal items such as holiday decorations, pool toys, or boating equipment. Make sure you clearly label the bins if they are stored out of reach.
  • Use overhead space in the garage and shed. Shelving or wood cradles can store long, flat items such as surfboards, outdoor umbrellas, and ladders.

Use these tips on how to categorize your organization to optimize space!

  • Basement storage is for tools, painting materials, and holiday decorations.
  • Shed storage is for all lawn and gardening equipment, plus outdoor furniture and cushions.
  • Garage storage is for the house and auto tools and items, the snow blower and shovels, sports equipment, and bicycles.

You can do this by Tackling one area at a time and keeping your eye on the prize. It’s a very rewarding project.
